How to Create a Winning Dressage Training Plan in 5 Minutes

How to Create a Winning Dressage Training Plan in 5 Minutes

Have you ever found yourself wandering aimlessly around the arena, riding circle after circle, and wondering why you aren’t seeing that "lightbulb moment" with your horse? Do you ever feel like you’re just "rehearsing" the same mistakes rather than training for progress? We’ve all been there! It is so easy to fall into the trap of aimless riding, especially when life gets busy and your time at the yard is precious.

But what if I told you that you could unlock your horse’s full potential and supercharge your progress with just five minutes of planning? Yes, you read that right! You don’t need a degree in sports science to create a professional-standard training schedule. You just need a bit of focus, a dash of enthusiasm, and the right framework.

At The Dressage Coach, we believe that dressage should be inclusive, fun, and accessible to everyone: whether you are aiming for your first Intro test or looking to smash those Medium-level goals! Let’s embark on this journey together and transform your riding from "winging it" to "winning it!"

Minute 1: Define Your Vision and Smash Your Goals

The first minute is all about Mindset Magic! You cannot reach a destination if you don’t have a map. Think about where you want to be in eight weeks. Are you looking for a more uphill canter? Do you want to finally nail those leg yields? Or perhaps you simply want your horse to stay more relaxed and "with you" during your tests?

To create a winning plan, you need to pick one clear, primary goal. Avoid the temptation to fix everything at once: this is a journey, not a race! Write down one sentence that defines your success. For example: "In 8 weeks, I want my horse to be confidently schooling Novice level movements with a steady, soft contact."

By narrowing your focus, you eliminate the overwhelm. You aren't just "riding"; you are training with purpose! If you need a little help visualising what success looks like, our Dressage Uncovered resource is a fantastic place to start peeling back the layers of training theory.

Minute 2: Map Your Weekly Masterpiece

Now that you have your "North Star" goal, it’s time for some Performance Plan Power! Most horses thrive on a routine that balances work, variety, and rest. You don't need to school every single day to be a dressage star. In fact, your horse’s brain and body will thank you for the variety!

Here is a tried-and-tested weekly structure that you can adapt in seconds:

  • 2 Days of Focused Dressage Schooling: This is where you work on your specific movements and the Training Scale.
  • 1/2 Days of Light/Stretchy/ Interval Work: Focus on relaxation, rhythm, fitness and stretching over the back. This is "active recovery."
  • 1 Day of Variety: This could be hacking, hill work, or playing with some cavaletti and poles.
  • 1 Day of Groundwork or Lunging: A great time to observe your horse’s movement from the ground.
  • 1 Day of Full Rest: A chance for those muscles to repair and for your horse to just be a horse in the field!

By scheduling your week this way, you ensure your horse stays motivated and "sparky." No one wants a horse who is bored of the arena! Write your plan down in one of our training journals or pop it in the app, so you can tick off your sessions and feel that surge of accomplishment!

Minute 3: The "Plug-and-Play" Ride Template

One of the biggest secrets to dressage success is consistency. You should use a similar structure for every single schooling session. This creates a "safety net" for your horse: they know what is coming, which builds immense confidence and relaxation.

Divide your 45-minute ride into these four high-energy phases:

  1. The Warm-Up (10–15 mins): Focus entirely on rhythm and relaxation. Think big circles, long reins, and plenty of transitions between walk and trot to wake up the hind leg. Depending on what level you are at, you should add some easy lateral work here too.
  2. The Basics (10 mins): Check your connection. Is your horse "on the aids"? Use loops and serpentines to check suppleness before you try anything "fancy."
  3. The Main Event (15 mins): This is where you tackle your goal for the week! Keep these bouts of work short and intense, followed by frequent walk breaks. Quality over quantity, always!
  4. The Cool-Down (5 mins): Let the horse stretch their neck down and out, rewarding them for their hard work.

Minute 4: Choose Your Focus (The Training Scale Secret)

Minute four is where we get technical but keep it simple! To make your plan "winning," you must align it with the Dressage Training Scale. Pick two themes for your week based on where you and your horse are currently at.

  • Rhythm & Relaxation: If your horse is young or tense, focus on a steady tempo and a happy tail!
  • Suppleness: Use lateral work like leg yields to make your horse soft and bendy in both directions!
  • Contact: Work on that "elastic" feel. If you’re struggling with this, checking out our Franklin Balls collection can be a total game-changer for your seat and feel.
  • Straightness: Are your horse’s shoulders in front of their hips? Use the centre line to test yourself: don't hide on the track!
  • Collection: For the more advanced pairs, focus on shifting the weight to the hindquarters with frequent half-halts.

Don't try to master the whole scale in one week. Pick your "battle" and win it!

Minute 5: The "Review and Renew" Ritual

The final minute is perhaps the most important. At the end of your ride, don't just jump off and run to the tack room. Take 60 seconds to reflect.

Ask yourself:

  • "What was our biggest win today?"
  • "Where did we feel a bit of 'stickiness'?"
  • "What is one thing I want to improve tomorrow?"

Jotting these down in your app or a notebook transforms "just a ride" into a strategic training journey. It allows you to see patterns over time. Maybe your horse is always stiff on Tuesdays? Maybe your canter transitions are much better after a hack? This data is gold dust for your progress!
